Reports reaching Q95 FM radio indicate that 2 of the 5 boys allegedly involved in the attack on Dominican teen Jahym Azoo, living in Antigua & Barbuda, are now charged with wounding and attempted murder, said Antigua police spokesman, Inspector Frankie Thomas.
Seventeen-year-old Jahym Azoo has been fighting for his life for several days at the Mount St. John’s Medical Centre (MSJMC) after being attacked by five boys in Grays Farm. Since the charge falls under Schedule III of the Child Justice Act 2015, the two minors charged were being held without bail up to Sunday night, and are in custody until they apply for bail before the High Court. According to the law, in Antigua & Barbuda, the Child Justice Board does not have the power to issue bail or release the boys into the custody of their parents, except in instances where the offences fall under Schedule I or II. If or when the boys are granted bail, another issue arises, because the law recommends that they be held in a safehouse, but there is no such facility in Antigua and Barbuda. Meantime, Azoo has undergone surgery and is still recovering at the hospital. He is no longer in the ICU. He was moved to the ward on Sunday. Acting Police Commissioner in St. Johns Antigua, Atley Rodney told reporters the police interviewed Azoo and “he is speaking”. He also stated that the situation which led to Azoo being battered into a coma was neither a mugging nor a robbery as was widely reported in the media. Atley Rodney told media the situation was more like a fight among young people which escalated quickly. Q95 news will continue to follow this developing story, and will provide you with more details as it becomes available.
