Five (5) Dominicans were among eighteen (18) Caribbean participants who successfully completed Two – Three (3) days Regional Training Courses in the Management of Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.
The Courses, a Training of Trainers Course ran from Sunday, July 9 – 11 and the Basic Content Course from Wednesday, July 12 – 14, 2017 and were coordinated by Disaster Risk Management Specialist Cecil Shillingford from Dominica and funded by the United States Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance of USAID. According to a release, programme Officer at the Office of Disaster Management, Donaldson Frederick and Fire Officers Grenfel Defoe and Calvin LeBlanc have successfully completed the Training of Trainers and will join the cadre of Caribbean Instructors for the USAID/OFDA HAZMAT Programme. Senior Environmental Health Officer, Isabella John, and Fisheries Officer, Julian Defoe, also successfully completed the Basic Content Course and will soon move to the Training of Trainers Course. Other Countries participating were St. Kitts/Nevis, St. Lucia, the Bahamas, Belize and Haiti. Topics covered included HAZMAT Incidents, Recognition and Identification of Hazardous Materials, Use of the Emergency Response Guidebook, Health and Safety and Initial Management of HAZMAT Incidents.
