Andrez Joseph, Alijah Titre, Fitz Jolly, Gylles Michel, Montell James and Romelcia Phillip, are six (6) young Dominican football players who have secured scholarships, to attend a university in the United States, after taking part in the 1st Annual College Player Showcase, which was hosted by the Free Kick Foundation (FKF).
An article on sporteavis.com stated that the College Player Showcase promised young student-athletes the opportunity to showcase their talents, in hopes of securing scholarships to US universities. Forty-five (45) student athletes from St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Grenada, St. Kitts and Antigua, participated in the trials in January 2017. Twenty (20) scholarships were offered, of which Dominica secured six (6), and the other fourteen (14) went to student athletes from Saint Lucia. The showcase was held for athletes under the age of twenty, who had completed high school or college. The students will leave Dominica and Saint Lucia to begin their studies in August. Romelcia Phillip received the awards for female basketballer and footballer during the 2017 National Sports award in May, while Gylles Michel was awarded male footballer of the year. Nick Anthony was the seventh student athlete from Dominica, who participated in the scouting exercise. The Free Kick Foundation has since been actively engaged in preparing the students for their transition to the US. The CEO of FKF, Aaron King, stated in the article, “Our interest & investment in these students is not limited to sporting achievements, but extends to fulfillment of their absolute potential, including education, life skills, broadening their horizons through travel, and a diverse range of opportunities. We believe that the US college experience will provide these students with the expert coaching and exposure to competition, that will help foster winning attitudes.”
