Agriculture Minister Johnson Drigo says Dominica has set its eyes on the US market for exports of dasheen. Speaking at a Town Hall Meeting in Belles the Agriculture Minister stated that Dominica has an opportunity to collaborate with the rest of the OECS, to export at least three 40-ft containers of dasheen fortnightly to the US, with Dominica as the main supplier. Drigo went on to stress the importance of dasheen farmers registering to take part in this venture. He says too often markets are lost due to low supplies, therefore farmers must be organized and ready to work, toward maintaining this specific potential market. Meanwhile, Drigo says there is high demand for Dominican produce on the OECS market. According to Drigo, Dominica remains the number one agricultural island within the OECS region, due to the superior quality of its produce. Drigo went on to pledge the Government’s aid to youth, whose interest lies in the business of Agriculture. He encouraged them to approach agriculture as a business, and not as a way to make a quick buck and “disappear”.
