All Convent High School (CHS) students resume classes despite hurdles caused by Hurricane Maria11/20/2017 All Convent High School (CHS) students have resumed classes, despite damages caused by Hurricane Maria. CHS principal Isabella Prentice said they have been trying their best to get things back on track.
Classes resumed during the first week in October, with the 4th and 5th formers, and it quickly became evident that the third formers could also be brought back. Prentice credited the assistance of parents, teachers and students, for the further cleaning that was done to accommodate the increased numbers of students. Once the third formers resumed classes school, they quickly recognized that all of the remaining students could begin classes. Prentice said, “The teachers were receptive to the idea, so right after the independence holiday, we brought in our 1st & 2nd formers. So our 3rd to 5th formers come in everyday from 8:30am to 12:30pm, and our 1st & 2nd formers come in daily from 12:30pm to 4:00pm. So we have given the longer shift to the older students, because they need more time, especially the fifth former’s, and the 1st formers get the shorter time, just to get them to remain in school mood, and to be occupied, otherwise they could become the devils workshop”. Prentice stated that the recovery process will be a long one, as the school had suffered considerable damage. She explained that they can only operate on the basic level, and they don’t know when the roof of the building will be repaired. However, she is hopeful that they will receive support, as 80% of their roof was lost, plus two computer labs containing 90 machines, thereby impacting ICT exams, and EDPM CSEC exams, but they are trying to see how they can work around these hurdles.
