The Court of Appeal decided yesterday afternoon that the extradition of Francesco Corallo (1960) is permissible. According to an article on the Saint Maarten News network website, the decision was taken after a request by Italy on 12th January 2017, for his extradition.
Corallo has been locked up in a police cell since December 2016. While the Italian Government requested the extradition of Corallo, there is a civil case pending in St Maarten, between Corallo and his father. Italy requested Corallo's extradition to face charges of tax evasion, bribery of politicians among other alleged offenses. Even as the Court of Appeals handed down a verdict today, the process for the extradition is still not over, since Corallo could still file an appeal with the Supreme Court in the Netherlands. The Governor of Saint Maarten will also now have to sign Corallo’s extradition. In 2011, the Government of Dominica sought to make Corallo its permanent representative to the Food & Agricultural Organization (FAO). In an official statement that same year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, that in a letter dated June 21, 2011, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sought the approval of the FAO for Corallo to be Permanent Representative of Dominica. However, by the time of the November 2011 arrest, the Ministry said it was still awaiting formal communication from the FAO, so as to proceed. It appeared that the appointment never came to fruition.
