The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, María Ángela Holguín, made an official visit on Saturday to Guyana where she held a bilateral meeting with the minister of foreign affairs of Guyana, Carl Greenidge. Guyana was the sixth and last country she visited during her Caribbean tour of Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Dominican Republic and Haiti.
The Colombian diplomat did not visit Suriname and it seems that ties between the two countries have been strained over the issue of Venezuela. Her tour comes just after the foreign minister of Venezuela went on a global tour of the Caribbean, Africa and Asia. More recently, the foreign affairs minister of Ecuador, María Fernanda Espinosa, one of a few last remaining supporters of the Nicolas Maduro regime, visited the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Suriname. Shawn Nicholas, opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) Senator in Antigua said that the public can expect more intense debate from her and her colleagues in the Upper House.
She said that the four UPP senators will be working assiduously to support the opposition’s lone Member of Parliament, Jamale Pringle. “Coming out of the general elections, a lot of us have gotten tougher and are now willing and able to carry the fight, and to carry it to the next election cycle,” Nicholas said. Nicholas, along with Richard Lewis, Damani Tabor and Jonathon Joseph will represent the opposition’s interests in the Upper House. They received their instruments of appointment from Governor General Sir Rodney Williams on Monday.
