Joshua Francis, Attorney-at-law and Parliamentary Representative for the Roseau South Constituency, stated in an interview on Talk on the Block on Q95fm Radio, that ‘the United Workers Party (UWP) will leave no one behind’ in his constituency. While Mr. Francis is encouraging individuals to return to school, he describes his opponent’s campaign strategies as a ‘vote buying process’. During his term at the podium at the United Nations meeting on ‘Climate and Sustainable Development for all’, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit stated that Dominica has defied all odds and is on a clear growth trajectory. Skerrit said statistics show that Dominica’s economy will grow by 9%, and the country is on an upward trajectory. He however did not clarify as to 9% of what figure, or what 9% represented as a specific financial amount. He said that this progress is being led by many Dominicans both at home and abroad, along with the support of international assistance. He added that there is still a challenge for small countries like Dominica and other sister Caribbean countries to compete on the global economic stage, while dealing with climate change. Dominica Freedom Party Leader, Kent Vital says the DLP administration dismantled the systems & departments that were put in place to protect Dominica’s resources. Vital highlighted a few projects implemented by the DLP Administration. However, he says when a project is completed, it appears as if the work is never done properly. Vital added that under a new political party administration and leader, citizens livelihoods will be significantly enhanced. PPOD Leader disapproves of the DLP’s national performance over its 19 year period in Government3/29/2019 Leader of the Peoples Party of Dominica (PPOD), Sapphire Carrington, has given her views on the performance of the Dominica Labour Party, and the level of development in Dominica over the past 19 years. Carrington told Q95 news, she would not be leading a new political party if she agreed with what was done in the last 19 years by the DLP administration. The Dominica Youth Business Trust has launched its tool library for Dominican entrepreneurs located on Charles Avenue on Goodwill Road. The tool library came about through a $35,000 donation by the Canadian funded Promotion of Regional Opportunities for Produce through Enterprise and Linkages (PROPEL) project. Former Jamaica PM Bruce Golding will lead a commonwealth group to observe the Maldives Parliamentary elections next month, the London-based Commonwealth Secretariat announced Tuesday.
It said that Golding led a Commonwealth Observer Group to Maldives elections in 2014 and that the group will be deployed to various provinces from April 4th. The Secretariat said that despite withdrawing from the Commonwealth in 2016, Maldives recently expressed an interest in re-joining and that as part of this process, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has requested a group to observe the vote, scheduled for April 6th. The Secretariat said that the observer group's report on the election will contribute to the Commonwealth Secretary General Patricia Scotland's informal assessment of the Maldives' reapplication. Taiwan wants to buy advanced new weaponry from the United States, the island's President Tsai Ing-wen said Wednesday.
Speaking during a visit to Hawaii, Tsai said requests had been submitted to buy new F-16fighters and M1 tanks. The move comes after the US Defense Intelligence Agency warned in January that China had rapidly modernized its military to improve its ability to fight regional conflicts over places like Taiwan, which Beijing regards as part of its sovereign territory. Marcus Romain, the UWP candidate for the Cottage constituency, contends that very little development of any substance was undertaken in the Cottage Constituency over the last 19 years, under the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) administration. Romain is of the opinion that preference is dominant when jobs are being distributed around the Cottage constituency, and DLP politicians now believe that they rule the people. Meantime, Romain is disappointed in the lack of attention that was given to employment and investment opportunities, in the Cottage Constituency by DLP Cottage MP Reginald Austrie, over the past 19 years.
