The Ministry of Health warns Dominicans to refrain from becoming ‘anti vaccine’ as the use of vaccines have birthed more benefits than risks. Public Health Nurse of the Grandbay Health District, Shana Seraphine, is urging persons to get vaccinated as well as to get their children vaccinated. Seraphine assures the public that during the Ministry’s Vaccine Campaign, running from April 26 to May 3, 2025, parents will be contacted to provide consent before their children are vaccinated against diseases like Hepatitis B. Chairman of the Dominica Freedom Party (DFP), Johnson Boston, has congratulated Trinidad and Tobago’s United National Congress (UNC) on its recent election victory. He extended special praise to party leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who returned to power after more than nine years. Minister of National Security Rayburn Blackmoore announced that a new magistrate will take office on May 1. He also revealed plans to introduce a night court. The minister emphasized that gun possession cases should be handled swiftly, without long delays. If someone is caught with a firearm, the case should not be postponed for months, he stated. Minister Blackmoore has commended the police for their efforts in tackling gun-related crimes. He revealed that in 2020, a total of 15 people—14 men and one woman—were arrested for illegal firearm possession. He claimed this shows the police are actively doing their job. Dominica is among 20 nations set to participate in a regional fisheries workshop hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization and the Western Central Atlantic Fishery Commission in Panama City, Panama, from May 7–8, 2025.The meeting is the first official collaboration between the FAO and the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas since formalizing ties in March 2024. The workshop will focus on strengthening cooperation, improving fisheries data collection, and addressing illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. The World Bank has approved a US$24 million Development Policy Credit to support Dominica’s efforts to strengthen domestic revenue generation, stabilize its financial sector, and improve climate and disaster resilience. Dominica’s economy, heavily reliant on tourism and rich in marine biodiversity, has been severely impacted by natural disasters such as Tropical Storm Erika and Hurricane Maria.
The funding supports fiscal reforms, including changes to excise taxes on fuel, alcohol, and sugary drinks, expected to boost revenue and improve health and environmental outcomes. It also aims to improve financial oversight of key institutions. Environmental initiatives include the creation of the world’s first marine protected area for sperm whales, with projected increases in eco-tourism revenue. Businessman Anderson Jolly has criticized the Dominica Labour Party (DLP), claiming it has run out of ideas and is not offering real solutions to the country’s problems. Jolly said he expected Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit to announce tax relief or even basic improvements like better garbage collection. President of the United Workers Party (UWP), Lennox Linton, has accused the government of using public funds to hide how it spends money from the Citizenship by Investment (CBI) programme. He criticized a recent statement by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, who said Dominicans should respond to attacks on the country like someone defending their home from being stoned. He also called on the Police Commissioner to take action, saying law enforcement is aware of serious public concerns, including statements that suggest violence, but continues to ignore them. The Government of Dominica says it is ramping up its investment in sports infrastructure to promote grassroots development and community engagement across the island. Over the past year, the Ministry of Sports has completed lighting upgrades at eight community playing fields, enabling extended play and organized events for youth, women, and seniors. A major highlight includes a $14 million project to restore lighting at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium, funded by the Lotteries Commission, bringing the venue up to international standards.
Projects under the Basic Needs Trust Fund are also underway, including a near-complete upgrade of the Trafalgar basketball court and ongoing improvements to the Delices Playing Field. The Ministry of Education through the Dominica TVET Council awarded National Vocational Qualifications Certificates to 60 individuals who successfully completed training in over 10 skill areas including Electricity, Plumbing, Commercial Food Preparation, Nail Technology and Cosmetology, Hair Braiding, Customer Service, Garment Construction, Fish Handling and Processing and Data Operations. On April 24, 2025, 50 candidates were awarded NVQ certificates in these skills.
As part of efforts to boost economic development through education, the Ministry of Education has integrated technical and vocational training into the curriculum of all seven public secondary schools. Students now have access to at least 12 skill areas, including auto mechanics, agriculture, IT, and garment construction. |
