CARICOM Ministers responsible for Environment and Sustainable Development met for the 112th Special Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development on the Environment and Sustainable Development on May 15, 2024. The Ministers considered the compounding impacts of the planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, economic uncertainty due to external shocks, and limited institutional and financial capacity. They noted that the Region’s survival continues to be severely challenged, and time for securing a sustainable future is fast running out.
The Ministers of the Environment remained deeply concerned about the unsustainable linear plastic production models that impact human health and result in untenable amounts of plastic pollution leakage into every ecosystem on Earth. Ministers committed to continue strong engagement, in partnership with AOSIS, in the final stages of the global plastic pollution treaty negotiations to secure an ambitious treaty that substantially reduces harmful chemical compounds in plastic products, provides a framework of support for remediation of legacy plastics pollution, reduces single-use plastics and microplastics, and promotes circular approaches. The Ministers underscored that technology transfer and innovation in key sectors are critical to SIDS, engagement of civil society and in particular, youth and community groups, and robust data systems to monitor and evaluate impacts of interventions, regional collaboration and knowledge sharing among SIDS, must drive implementation. The Ministers called for a unified & collaborative approach as the Region participates in high-level engagements scheduled for 2024. Recognizing that the 4thSIDS Conference presents an opportunity for recalibration to place SIDS on the path to resilient prosperity, they urged the active engagement of Member States, partners & stakeholders. Motivational Speaker & Human Rights Advocate, Delia Cuffy-Weekes, urges Dominicans to join the ‘Priority You’ movement - which allows persons to designate 30 minutes of their day to positive engagement and healthy activity. Economist & UWP Leader, Dr. Thomson Fontaine, says the upcoming Dominica Economic Revival Summit from June 4 to 6, will bring real solutions to the many issues plaguing Dominica’s economy and its people at present. Dr. Fontaine added that Dominicans have suffered long enough under the current government. He said it is clear that only a handful of close friends and Ministers are benefiting from CBI revenues. This, he says, has weakened the economy significantly. He advises Dominicans that the new deadline date for registration to attend the summit is May 31, 2024. The Emergency Agricultural Livelihoods and Climate Resilience Project (EALCRP), in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, has implemented solar fencing systems for livestock, specifically targeting ruminants. This initiative aims to enhance pasture management, boost ruminant production, and control parasites. Unlike traditional fencing methods, the Solar Wire Fencing Technology offers a modern alternative. So far, 60 livestock farmers on the island have benefited from this project. The Solar Fencing Technology system offers several advantages, including the flexibility to move it between different areas & the capability to charge via a solar energy battery, ensuring optimal efficiency.
