At a pre-budget consultation held recently, a proposal was made by Kertiste Augustus, secretary Treasurer of the Waterfront & Allied Workers Union (WAWU), asking the government to add more extensive health coverage to benefit employees in the private sector. He says “we are aware that a pilot has been done by the government, and that is for all intent and purpose working, but we would like to see something a little bit broader than what was initially proposed.” Augustus suggests that revenue from the value added tax could be of great benefit in this regard, preferably half a percent. In a formal letter written to PM Roosevelt Skerrit last week by the DAEC, requesting that the bill be delayed to allow for wider discussions on its contents, the DAEC has asked for clarity on the section of the bill that speaks to penalizing the intent to compel government to do or refrain from doing any act for the purpose for religious cause. The DAEC says that they need to understand the possible impact that this may have on matters pertaining to faith and Doctrine in Dominica. Pastor Randy Rodney says that the DAEC believes that the bill impacts the fundamental rights and freedoms of persons, and raises further questions of intent. According to Chief Executive Officer of NCCU Ltd Mr Aylmer A Irish, the cooperative business model has once again helped the National Cooperative Credit Union Ltd (NCCU) turn in a commendable financial showing for the Fiscal Year 2017. When the Society's membership gathers at the Goodwill Parish Hall on Thursday, June 28, 2018 at 5 pm for the 8th Annual General Meeting, the Board of Directors will report overall growth, "and despite the ravages caused by Hurricane Maria", NCCU "remained strong".
Total assets climbed to $588,069,125 as at December 31, 2017 com-pared to $518,315,489 in the previous year, an increase of $69,753,276 or 13.46%, fueled by an exponential increase in members' savings. The Society recorded a commendable, but lower, net surplus of $2,850,988 for the financial year ending December 31, 2017 as a result of a reduction in interest income following Hurricane Maria. At the end of August 2017, net surplus of $4,411,494 was recorded an increase of 8.79% or $356,357 over that of 2016. "The Credit Union was on course to celebrate the biggest year since the amalgamation in 2010 when the hurricane struck". Other notable achievements for the NCCU in 2017 were the increase in membership of 2,853, driven by the transfer of 1473 members from the South-Eastern Cooperative Credit Union, and an increase in Member Share Capital by 13.72% or $620,100 to $5,140,440. As at December 31, 2017, NCCU's Total Equity stood at $67,169,711, an increase of $3,857,410 or 6.10%. Despite the challenging operating environment, operating costs did not increase significantly and interest expense was carefully managed declining by 3.2%. Bazil also referenced the work done in his constituency, under his leadership, where the various village councils formulated two needs assessment lists post Tropical Storm Erika in 2015 and post Hurricane Maria in 2017. A senior representative from Canada’s Immigration Department has advised that the agency is, as a matter of policy, is flagging incoming traffic from Dominica, St Kitts & Nevis, Antigua & Barbuda, St Lucia and Grenada, all East Caribbean states with active Citizenship by Investment programs. Canada says it is unable to determine who is or is not a CBI passport holder. This action is due to the agency's concerns about the identities of CBI passport holders, who may have had a different name, place of birth, and/or date of birth entered into the passport than the correct information. Whether the passport photograph is of the holder, or has been swapped out from the photo originally attached in the East Caribbean are also concerns, based on what they have been seeing. According to www.wantedsa.com, the agency is also examining the names of relatives that the arrivals are purportedly visiting, and other visa data, to ensure that the holder of the passport is truly the individual listed therein. President of the Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM) Loftus Durand says he is disappointed in the lack of due diligence in the operations of the DLP’s CBI program, which has led to this recent decision by the Canadian government.
