Attorney at Law & Ecological Activist in International Environmental law from 1993 - 2006, Henry Shillingford, explains that he supports the idea of the establishment of a Sperm Whale Reserve, as the government held its first reading of the Sperm Whale Reserve Act on June 24, 2025. The Government of Dominica says the act will address noise pollution and ship strikes facing these species in our marine space. However, Shillingford says the current stipulations in the act restrict boats over 60 ft from passing through the reserve which extends from Point Round to the Woodbridge Bay Port, and then from Castle Comfort to Scotts Head. He reveals that many of the tour operators working within the Marine Tourism space and the yachting sector, have expressed deep concern with this and requested further consultation. The government announced that it would only hold the first reading of the act, to give room for consultation and amendments to be made to the act to the benefit of the Sperm Whales and stakeholders within the marine tourism industry. UWP Caretaker for Roseau Central, Glenroy Cuffy raised concerns on the Workers Voice on Q95 about growing financial challenges faced by families in Dominica. He shared that, according to a close friend, some students of high school and college age are opting to seek employment rather than continue their education due to their parents' inability to afford the costs. Cuffy emphasized the seriousness of the issue, noting that financial hardship is forcing many young people to abandon their academic aspirations. He called attention to the need for greater support systems to ensure that all students, regardless of economic background, have access to higher education and the opportunity to reach their full potential. An ERC Press Release said twelve innocent citizens detained and charged for exercising their constitutional rights to oppose and protest against electoral legislation that perpetuates the 25- year dictatorial leadership of Roosevelt Skerrit will appear at the magistrate’s court in Roseau on Monday June 30, 2025 to answer charges under a colonial riot act that was instituted for the oppression of black people in the era of slavery.
On March 19, 2025, the Dominica Labour Party Government with the unfortunate support of the parliamentary opposition passed the bogus electoral legislation without the consideration of campaign financing regulations. The most vexing issue that allows Roosevelt Skerrit to continue to manipulate general elections since 2005, when he sold the first diplomatic passport to finance the Dominica Labour Party campaign. In a display of blatant contempt for the Dominican people, on June 1st, 2025, Roosevelt Skerrit spent $3.5 million for the 70th anniversary celebrations of the Dominica Labour Party aided and abetted by the chairman of Caricom Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbados. There is no doubt that the Dominica Labour Party has an undisclosed source of money at its disposal that will be used to continue to fund its election campaign and unless there is campaign finance regulations in place the gullible voters in Dominica and overseas will continue to be bribed to keep Roosevelt Skerrit in power. The citizens who peacefully protested on March 19 were fighting for a just cause and there is no justification to have these people dragged before the court. The Electoral Reform Coalition is calling on the Director of Public Prosecution to discontinue the charges against the 12 Dominicans charged for the peaceful protest of March 19, 2025. The Electoral Reform Coalition is also appealing to the government of Dominica to expeditiously put the mechanisms in place to go to parliament with the campaign financing regulations that the prime minister said that would be legislated at a later date. Until such time that campaign financing regulations are not adequately addressed the struggle for Electoral reform will continue. Deputy Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP), Hector John, has urged for a shift in Dominica’s education approach to better support students who may not thrive academically. Speaking on Workers Voice, he emphasized the need for early skills training for children, suggesting that parents and teachers play a key role in preparing young people to become self-reliant. John expressed concern that the current focus on academics presents a much too narrow view in the education sector. He argued that equipping youth with practical skills from an early age would provide alternative pathways to success, particularly through self-employment, reducing their dependence on limited job opportunities in the private sector.
