The National Cooperative Credit Union held its Official Cadence Lypso Show launch on Tuesday evening at their Roseau Branch. The much anticipated and exciting line up was presented as well the bands to be played at the event. Colin Piper, Executive Director, Discover Dominica Authority, gave his remarks at the event saying that it is a tremendous achievement seeing the progress after Hurricane Maria. Piper says that he is sending out a call to all those local and abroad to attend and take part of the Independence season activities. He says that though some may have concerns about the readiness of the country a year after Maria, all doors are open and the destination island Dominica has made a remarkable recovery. Barbados is hoping to capitalize on increased airlift from the United States (US) this winter season.
Minister of tourism and international transport, Kerrie Symmonds, disclosed that American Airlines will be providing daily service to Barbados from Charlotte, North Carolina and three daily flights from Miami. Explaining that these flights should allow Barbados to capture “the tremendous power” of those gateways, he said that the aim was to increase capacity year round. A delegation comprising of eight Chief Executive Officers from the Indiana Credit Union systems are on a historic visit to Dominica. The President and Chief Executive Officer of the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) Dr. Brian Branch will lead the Delegation. The visit is part of WOCCU’s efforts to assist the credit union movement and by extension, the Commonwealth of Dominica recover and rebuild resilient systems through technical empowerment. WOCCU also partnered with the Caribbean Confederation of Credit Unions (CCCU) in providing support to the Government of Dominica with the provision of tents and chairs to assist in the reopening of schools. The team will be facilitating a Strategic Empowerment Workshop for Credit Union staff and volunteers of the movement from September 26-28, 2018. The Workshop which will focus on Strategic Agricultural Lending, Micro Finance-local and Adaptation Practices, Financial Positions and Risk Analysis, Strategic Planning among others. More than fifty (50) senior management staff and volunteers are expected to benefit from the intense three-day strategic workshop. Police are investigating the discovery of the lifeless body of 69 year-old John Rabess of Atkinson. “Rabess’s lifeless body was found at about 8:00 pm on the playing field in the vicinity of the Atkinson Primary School, on Monday September 24, 2018. Police PRO Inspector Simon Edwards reported that he was last seen alive at 10.00 am on Sunday September 23, 2018”. Edwards said the body was examined at the scene by the District Medical Officer and officially pronounced dead. He added that the body was transported to the North Eastern Funeral Association parlor and that a post mortem is to be conducted. Electoral Office announces Elias Dupuis has been appointed as its Press/Public Education Officer9/26/2018
The Electoral Commission has announced that Elias Dupuis has been appointed as its new Press/Public Education Officer. Dupuis’ functions will include organizing and disseminating information to the public on voter registration, voting procedures and on the programs of the Commission and the Electoral Office; intensifying publicity and voter education on electoral issues and managing the Commission’s social media presence. Dupuis said, “This is a fascinating challenge for me and I am excited to bring my unique experience and skills to the post for use in service of the Commission and of my country. I feel an immense sense of duty taking up this role, a role that will play a part in an ambitious mandate, which I truly believe in.” Electoral Commission Chairman Gerald Burton said “The Commission expects Mr. Dupuis will assist in improving public trust and confidence in the Electoral Process, through public education and openness.” Dupuis was the 2015 Caribbean Technology Entrepreneur of the Year (C-YES) and 2014 Entrepreneur of the Year (Elias Nassief Foundation, Dominica), as part of 365 Group Inc.
