Dominicans on island will not be the only ones celebrating Dominica’s independence this week. The Dominica Association of Seventh-day Adventists in the U.S. (DASUS) is set to host its Annual Dominica Day Church Service on Saturday, November 05, 2016 at the Grand Concourse Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1275 Grand Concourse, Bronx, New York.
Dominica Day is a celebration of the 38th Anniversary of Dominica’s Independence and will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a culturally-themed Sabbath School. Dominican born, Pastor Josian Frampton, will be the featured speaker at Divine Worship, which begins at 11:00 a.m. Every Dominican across the United States of America (USA) is invited to come together to worship God and acknowledge faith and heritage.

The three nights of the 2016 World Creole Music festival saw bumper crowds, as Dominicans and visitors turn out in huge numbers to see performance by their favorite local regional and international entertainers.
The 19th edition of the Annual World Creole Music Festival took place at the Windsor Park Stadium in Roseau, Dominica, from Friday 28th to Sunday 30th October. Friday’s line-up presented high energy performances from Timaya of Nigeria, Midnight Groovers and Original Bouyon Pioneers of Dominica, Kreyol La from Haiti, Grand Mechant Zouk of the French Antilles, Popcaan from Jamaica, and Triple Kay Global of Dominica. The Saturday night line-up saw dynamic presentations from Xtasy Band of Dominica, Dede Saint Prix of Martinique, Ophelia Marie of Dominica, Kes The Band of Trinidad, Mr. Killa of Grenada, Morgan Heritage of Jamaica, Wyclef Jean of Haiti, and WCK of Dominica. Sunday’s line-up brought the curtains down with fantastic presentations from Breve, Ti Mickey, Michelle Henderson of Dominica, Gentleman of Germany, Asa Bantan of Dominica and Akon of Africa. Patrons seem to have got their money’s worth, and Dominica recorded high levels of visitor arrivals and expenditure, as a direct result of the WCMF. The reason or origin of the altercation is still unknown at this time, but one group of cutlass-wielding and stone-throwing young people attacked another group at the event, and later at the Loubiere Resource Center.
Sources indicated that the two groups began hurling stones and bottles at each other. The group of men who were at the reception then retreated to the Resource Center and locked themselves inside. However, the other group, reportedly from Loubiere, including a young woman, and led by a young man wielding a cutlass, went to the resource center and broke through the door, and attacked one of the men inside the Resource Center. He was allegedly hit on the head by a stone. The attacking group reportedly fled the scene, but persons who allegedly witnessed the incident stated that they knew the identity of the attackers, and that they lived in the Loubiere area. The married couple was left distraught at the unexpected occurrence. The police and the ambulance service eventually arrived on the scene and the injured man was taken away. Gracie Sandy Eusebe, a Dominica Chef at Island Sizzle in Baugher’s Bay in Tortola, has apparently planned a weekend of activities commencing today Friday 28th October 2016, at her workplace. Eusebe says the activities will be centered around the culture of Dominica. Eusebe says three DJ’s and a band with ties to the ‘Nature Isle’ playing back to back tunes, will serenade patrons, while patrons enjoy various Dominican foods prepared by Eusebe and her team. She adds that patrons will also have the opportunity to reconnect with old friends, and to make new ones. She said, “I did it the first time in 2014, but I was not available in 2015, so I decided to do something this year. Just a little something to make those who didn’t go home, to feel some Dominica vibes.” Eusebe hopes that the old flames of the Dominica Association, that was once operational in the BVI, will be rekindled. |
