In an address earlier today, Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit announced that President Charles Savarin has been advised to issue the writ, officially commencing the By-Election for the Grandbay Constituency. This is following the untimely death of Grand Bay MP John Fitzgerald Edward Registe on September 1, 2021. The writ is to be issued pursuant to Section 12 of the House of Assembly (Elections) Act; Chap. 2:01. The Prime Minister went on to claim that the Opposition United Workers Party is not inclined to cooperate in this matter, and announced that his administration will undergo an all-virtual Election Campaign. Dominica celebrates 30 years of Creole celebrations. 28th October is the International Creole Day as proclaimed by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). Every year since 1983, the day has been an opportunity to celebrate the Creole language and culture across countries and communities sharing Creole, that is, more than 10 million people around the world. Jounen Kwéyòl (Creole Day) is celebrated in Dominica and Saint Lucia. In Dominica it is observed on the last Friday in October. In Saint Lucia, it is observed on the last Sunday of October. In 1981, Saint Lucia celebrated Creole Day for the first time. Since then this celebration of French Creole Heritage has extended into a month of music, dance, cuisine, art and other cultural expressions. The event is a celebration of the richness and diversity of Saint Lucia’s cultural, ethnic and artistic heritage. With musical, theatrical and other performances, seminars and lectures, a variety of culinary experiences, street parties, art exhibitions, the Festival culminates on the weekend of October 28th with the celebration of International Creole Day (Jounen Kweyol) in various communities throughout the island. The latest on Dominica’s Covid statistics, as of October 26, 2021, Dominica has 31 new active cases, 4 new discharges, and the total number of active cases stands at 408.
Dominica now has 31 reported Covid-related deaths, the total number of people recovered since March 2020 is 4,252, and the total confirmed cases from the start of the pandemic is 4,691. Additionally, the number of Covid tests conducted are 90,439- with 27,636 of them being PCR tests and 62,803 being antigen tests, as of Tuesday 27,793 people have received one dose of the Covid Vaccine, and 24,756 have received their two doses. Letang revealed that in many cases, the Permanent secretaries run to the minister to whom they are accountable, to negate arranging meetings between themselves as Permanent Secretary, the Union Executive and the group of Public Officers who may be disgruntled at the time. Letang also revealed a shocking reality expressed by Dominica’s Prison Officers, that ‘the Minister of National Security has tricked them for the last time as a politician,’ and they no longer trust him to participate in discussions of improving their work conditions at the State Prison.
