He says through its 'Build Back Better and Stronger' initiative, the Government was able to achieve major accomplishments. TS Erika tore across Dominica in August 2015, devastated some villages, wrecked some bridges, and left the country with a $1.3 billion reconstruction bill. Mr. Skerrit made particular mention of the resettlement of the Dubique community, which was displaced as a result of the storm.

Public Works Ministry to repair a section of road which collapsed at Cabanis in the Roseau Valley12/29/2016 The Ministry of Public Works is seeking to address a section of road which collapsed at Cabanis in the Roseau Valley.
Authorities have since closed the road in the area which leads to Fond Canie, Shawford, Laudat and Trafalgar. Reports are that half of the road fell into the river in the area on Wednesday morning. Parliamentary Representative for the Roseau Valley Constituency Dr Colin McIntyre on his Facebook page, urged all motorists and drivers to note that the Cabanis road in Fond Canie has been seriously compromised, and officials are advising to use the Wotten Waven, Trafalgar link road as a temporary measure, until further advised. Equipment worth 200,000 Euros presented to Agro-Processors & DMA members to improve products12/29/2016 Over 200,000 Euros worth of equipment was presented to members of the Dominica Manufacturers Association (DMA) & Agro-Processors, for improvement of their products.
The equipment was procured by the European Union (EU) through the office of the Banana Accompanying Measures (BAM), and was handed over to the members on Wednesday morning, at the conference room of the NDFD. National Authorizing Officer Carleen Roberts says although the resources could not meet all the needs, she urges the manufacturers to use the equipment for the sustained success of their businesses. Government has decided to move displaced Silver Lake residents from shelters to rented premises12/29/2016 Following the recent fire at Silver Lake, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said one of the decisions taken by cabinet is the provision of rented accommodation for the displaced families, in order to minimize the time spent at shelters.
Currently 6 families are being housed at the Bath Estate Community Center, and 7 at the Roseau Primary school, while the others are in different facilities. LaPlaine residents want change in Village Council Leadership says DPC ChairmanJason Fontaine12/29/2016 Chairman of the LaPlaine Village Council Jason Fontaine believes the residents of LaPlaine want change in leadership for their village.
Fontaine says his team, even if they have not yet been elected, has already started transforming the village from their own means. Five customers have emerged winners of the AC Shillingford 7-11 Annual Christmas Promotional Raffle.
The winners are Francois Maximea, Kimone Gregoire, Grandel Bruno, David Castle and David Samuel. The winners received their prizes at the company's main location Wednesday. Government of Dominica presented $20,000 to twenty (20) families in Silver Lake displaced by fire12/29/2016 The government of Dominica has presented $20,000 to families displaced by a fire in Silver Lake.Twenty cheques each valued at $1,000 were handed over to the head of the 20 households which were affected. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said government will move swiftly to ensure there is work day and night, to resettle those displaced by the fire in Silver Lake, which occurred on Monday night.The 20 cheques of $1000.00 each, were handed over Monday morning at the Bath Estate community centre. Housing Minister Reginald Austrie says a few years ago, government recognized the need to improve housing in the Silver Lake community.He says this process of improvement will be accelerated now, following the fire. Austrie says work on the 3rd and 4th buildings will be done swiftly. Health & Safety head claim Petro Caribe is the only Dominica company using fibre glass cylinders12/29/2016 Head of Health & Safety of Petro Caribe Leah Moses-Pascal says the company has gone above and beyond, by being the only one in Dominica using fibre glass cylinders. Pascal says the fibre glass cylinders are much safer than those offered by their competition. Meantime, Pascal is encouraging persons to ensure their cylinders are upright while being transported. Jason Fontaine who is also thecurrent Chairman of the LaPlaine disaster preparedness committee, says his team of five who are contesting9th January Village Council Elections, will be launching their manifesto for the 3-year period from 2017 to 2020.
Fontaine says the Launch will take place in LaPlaine at the Wyllis Junction at 7:30pm. These nominated members led by Jason Fontaine also include Ella Laudat, Moses Prosper, Asher Laronde, and Kurvin Bateau. Residents of LaPlaine and neighbouring villages are invited to attend this launch. Government promises to provide capital funding for Homecare Service Providers operating on Island12/29/2016 A number of homecare service providers on island will be provided with capital funding to address some of the challenges which they face.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit made that announcement recently, as he gave Government's commitment to continue investing in the network of social services providers.
