Works to improve the standard of the State Prison are being carried out. Midwife Consultant and Owner of Tender Love Services, Rosie Felix, is urging Dominican Leaders to adopt the guidelines of the 16th recommendation of the Sustainable Development Goal index. In 2015, 195 nations agreed with the United Nation that they can change the world for the better. This was to be accomplished by bringing together their respective governments, businesses, media, institutions of higher education& local NGOs to improve the lives of the people in their country by 2030. Dominican social activist Rianna Patterson is raising awareness on the impacts of dementia.Awarded the Queen's Young Leaders Award by Queen Elizabeth in Buckingham Palace in the UK in 2017 for her work in the field of dementia, 23-year-old Rianna Patterson says she needs a little help put a documentary together. The founder of the Dominica Dementia Foundation says she intends to create lasting change in her homeland. MsPatterson says the amount she is seeking to raise is 35,000 pounds.She added that her grandfather is the key to her motivation.She hopes this film will be more than just a documentary, but more like a global campaign on raising awareness of dementia. She then shared a bit of her upbringing and her experience first-hand with dementia and what got her motivated to begin her journey. Dominica’s State Prison conditions are expected to be improved in 2021, says Superintendent at the Dominica State Prison, Kenrick Jean-jack. He said one of the new initiatives will be non-contact visits.This comes at a time where Covid-19 has openly highlighted the need for such changes, in keeping with the Health Ministry’s Implemented protocols. Kalinago individuals residing in Dominica and in the Diaspora recently undertook on an initiative to grant recognition to Kalinagos who have been very influential in the progress of the community during the course of 2020. The initiative aims to boost the morale of the Kalinago People, motivate them to excel in the field that they are engaged in and to encourage them to work towards the holistic development of the Kalinago People.
The nomination process for the 4 award categories were done virtually and the selection for the awards was based on popular vote.Mrs. Gweneth Cyrille Frederick, manager of the Kalinago Barana Aute, has been selected as the Kalinago Woman of the Year 2020 over three (3) other nominees. The position of Kalinago Man of the year, went to attorney at law Joel Paris, who was called to the bar in 2019. Law student Whitney Melinard was selected as most Inspiring Kalinago Youth (Female). Ms Melinard is a Kalinago rights advocate. Sineku Primary School Teacher Mr. Devon Cuffy was selected as the Most Inspiring Kalinago Youth (Male) of 2020. Mr. Cuffy has spearheaded a COVID-19 outreach programme geared at distributing packages to the sick and shut-ins in the Kalinago Territory. This recognition initiative was non-partisan and the first of its kind. This event is expected to become an annual highlight, with endorsements from Dr. Theodore Thomas and Mr. Kittian Francis DOMLEC is engagedin doing maintenance work at the Snug Corner area and shared some information with the general public on its operations.
