The Dominica Manufacturer’s Association says it supports Dominica Coconut Products Successors (DCPS) Ltd in a case against Jamaica’s Soap Manufacturers. DCPS Ltd has taken this matter to CARICOM, arguing that Jamaican manufacturers are cheating the required process by skipping the soap-making/saponification process, and purchasing near ready-made soap from Indonesia, a country that is outside the Caribbean region. In the latest on the DCPS case against Jamaican manufacturers, CARICOM’s council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) has determined that soap manufacturers in Jamaica are not eligible to receive Certificates of Origin for their soap exports. In efforts to commemorate its 10th Anniversary, the National Credit Union held an NCCU Primary School’s Art Competition. Three Primary students have emerged victorious. Sydney Etienne won the first place for Baroness Patricia Scotland Primary School; Nilton Valmond of the Trafalgar Primary school got second place; and third place went to Kerensa Joseph of the Baroness Patricia Scotland Primary School.
Marketing Manager at the NCCU, Shari Pascal-Maronie said “It was NCCU’s 10th Anniversary and the theme was centered on young savers because we want to instill that discipline in them early, to save for the future,” she said. “We were delighted that we received submissions before the deadline, but we got calls and messages to consider changing the age since it was first only for ten-year-olds because it was our 10thanniversary. We changed it from 7-10 years old,” Pascal-Maronie stated. She continued “Art is something that is very important, and we are happy that the teachers and parents played a major part in it, and we want to urge you the students to continue doing your artwork.” The NCCU hired artist Shadrack Burton to do the judging. Chief Executive Officer of the NCCU Aylmer Irish said, “We are open to ideas, feel free to advise us through our marketing manager, encourage others to participate the next time around!” Chairman of the Dominica Police Welfare Association Jefferson Drigo says the PWA is still in negotiations with government for the 2018-2021 triennium for increase in salaries. He says the association expects to meet with government this Thursday to finalize negotiations. The PWA has been working to achieve better wages for police officers among other things to improve their living conditions. Tourism Minister Denise Charles claims that the down-time experienced due to the COVID-19 pandemic has created the opportunity to conduct well needed reviews of the marketing and product development strategy for the tourism sector. She says it is her hope that in 2021, the tourism sector will move from merely adapting, to evolving and thriving, to ensure that Dominica stands tall in that industry. The ECCB recorded its highest profit ever, at 63.1 Million Dollars, says Governor of the ECCB Timothy N J Antoine. The 2019/2020 financial year, which ended on March 31, 2020, was a record-breaking year for the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) which posted its best financial results since its establishment in 1983. The Bank reported a net profit of $63.1 million, exceeding the previous year’s profit by $30.4 million or 93.0 per cent.The Bank’s Annual Report and Statement of Accounts for the financial year ended 31 March 2020. Mr. Antoine was highlighting some of the major achievements by the ECCB in the year 2020, at the time of the statement, where he listed a few other milestones achieved for the year 2020.
