Art Enthusiasts, Collectors & Tourists can now view & purchase local art at a National Art Gallery5/9/2017 Art Enthusiasts, Art Collectors and Tourists will now have a central location for viewing and purchasing of local art with the launch of a National Art Gallery last evening.
According to a release, the Gallery is housed at the Old Mill Cultural Centre, a former sugar mill site which dates back to the 1700s, the period of plantation slavery. The Gallery is said to comprise two floors, the upper one features a permanent display of art exhibits, and the lower floor features art exhibitions of a temporary nature, and art works available for sale. The National Art Gallery will thus serve as a permanent space, for the display of art works, both of tremendous historical or heritage value and contemporary art works by Dominican artists here at home, and in the Diaspora. It will also serve as a home for a National Art Collection. The launch which forms part of DOMFESTA 2017, will see an address and ribbon cutting by Minister for Culture Honourable Justina Charles. The Gallery is curated by well-known Dominican Artist Earl Etienne. The National Cultural Council and the Cultural Division are responsible for its management and upkeep.
