Political activist Athie Martin is urging Dominicans to pay attention to the latest initiative by the United States, to target countries about which they are concerned. He says the US is reviewing its visa waiver program, in an attempt to tighten immigration security toward all countries around the globe including Dominica. Earlier this year, US President Donald Trump signed the executive order for a travel ban on travellers from six (6) Muslim countries which was heavily criticized as an attempt to bar Muslims from entering the country. He says this review could render visa holders and others who seek to enjoy the benefits of the US subject to repatriation if deemed a threat. Meanwhile, Martin describes potential repatriation of Dominicans in the US as a harsh indication of the abdication of the duties of the ministers of national security and foreign affairs.
He says if Dominica is barred from the US, this could severely impact Dominicans legitimately living in the US, estranging them from family, as well as forbidding them to conduct business in Dominica. According to Martin, if there has been no response from the government, this could provide grounds for these ministers to ask permission to abandon their roles in office.
