Dominican born Attorney Gabriel J Christian of the Maryland Law Offices of Gabriel J Christian & Associates, is calling for the formation of a National Unity Government in Dominica, to bring ‘all hands on deck’, to optimally and effectively build and develop Dominica’s struggling economy, post Hurricane Maria. Christian emphasized the ideas, knowledge, experience & effectiveness that such an entity could bring to the table, in a similar manner as obtained after the passage of Hurricane David on August 29, 1979. He is convinced that a Government of national unity would ensure a sustainable path for the development of Dominica. Christian asks what more can the Dominica Diaspora do, apart from what it has already done, If Government will not allow it the opportunity to do more? Meanwhile, Christian says the Dominican Diaspora communities have no interest in partisan politics. Christian gave several examples of symposiums organized by the Diaspora where democracy was upheld, and all sides were allowed to provide their views. He also mentioned opportunities which were provided by the Diaspora for Political Leaders to speak on state matters outside of Dominica. Meantime, Christian says he was one of the Diaspora Leaders who were disinvited at the recent Donors conference held at the UN Headquarters in New York.
According to Former Dominica UN Ambassador Crispin Gregoire, the Dominican government delegation allegedly told the Caricom Organizing Committee, that Dominica’s Diaspora Leaders were coming to the conference to disrupt that high level meeting. Christian says he was informed twice by Officials from the conference, to stay home to avoid any embarrassment.
