Dominican Attorney Wayne Norde has voiced his concerns, and is calling on Tourism Minister Senator Robert Tonge to cease all works on the ‘Jacks Walk’ site, which forms an historic part of the Botanic Gardens.
Established in 1891, these well-appointed gardens in Roseau, also contain an aviary with Sisserou parrots, plus the famous 'crushed bus', a victim of the devastation of Hurricane David in 1979. It is also home to offices of the Forestry Department & related government departments. The idea of establishing the Roseau Botanic Gardens was conceived in 1889 by the British Crown Government, which wanted to encourage the supply of properly propagated seedlings of varied tropical crops,in the interest of the island’s farmers. The Government bought the site from William Davies, then owner of ‘Bath Estate’, and the planning & planting of the Gardens began in 1890. Norde stresses that the natural elements of the Botanical Gardens must be preserved, as this historical Landmark forms part of Dominica’s history. Norde and his team are now threatening to file a lawsuit against the Ministry of Tourism, if it proceeds on modifying the natural site known as ‘Jacks Walk’
