Bahamas opposition wants national spy agency reinstated as US House passes surveillance bill1/16/2018 The opposition Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), at a press conference over the weekend, has called for the Bahamas National Intelligence Agency (NIA) to be reinstated and its mandate made clear, as the US House of Representatives renewed the long debated warrantless digital communications surveillance law last Thursday on a vote of 256-164.
The Bill, which is an extension of the powers given to the US National Security Agency (NSA) under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), 2001 as a response to the September 11 terrorist Attacks of that same year, gives power to the US intelligence agencies to intercept, survey and act upon information received through electronic communications. The issue of such surveillance by the NSA came into sharp focus in The Bahamas in 2013 when it was revealed that that there were several countries targeted by the American government with respect to the digital surveillance of metadata: Mexico, Philippines, Kenya, The Bahamas and Afghanistan.
