Caribbean Journalist Jerry George added his voice to analyses of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit’s statements during his trip to Russia. Dominica’s prime minister made a trip to Russia as the first leader from the English speaking Caribbean to be invited to speak at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum. During discussions with Russian Government Officials, including the Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov, Prime Minister Skerrit offered Dominica to serve as a bridge for communication between Russia and members of CARICOM. George says the Dominican Prime Minister could not have made these statements without the support of other Caribbean leaders. Meanwhile, George says Caribbean leaders appear to be searching for an easy way out, to garner funds to keep their economies afloat.
According to George, there are many issues to be solved internally within the region. However, CARICOM leaders seem to favour continually asking for funding from the international community. He went on to liken this behaviour as prostitution and questioned how this has improved the governance or productive abilities of countries in the region.
