Lay Associate in Pastoral Care in the Catholic Church and a former permanent secretary, Davis Letang, is suggesting that the minimum wage in Dominica be reviewed and significantly increased. As a means of dealing with the poverty issue in Dominica, and increasing spending power among citizens.
Letang, made this statement while addressing a national consultation for church leaders and key stakeholders recently. He said, “As church leaders we also need to be concerned, not just that we are working, but also that we are being fairly remunerated for our labour. The need for a fair wage is also a major concern. In Dominica there has been a lot of talk about reviewing the minimum wage and I still think that it is something that we need to consider, if we seriously want to look at how we want to improve family.” Additionally Letang believes that the society and country must ensure that each young person has avenues to find gainful work, in order that their family can fulfill that responsibility.
