Chief Elections Officer Steven Larocque says setbacks with amendments to the electoral laws, could impact the electoral commission's ability to deliver National ID cards for the next general elections. An attempt made in May to amend the laws in parliament, was met with stiff resistance from the opposition and the public. Larocque says, without the legislation, the commission cannot proceed with the process. He says many meetings were held with the various stakeholders to relay the importance of the amendments for the election process. Meantime, Mr Larocque has given the assurance that the bio-metric data which will be required for the national ID Cards will be confidential and will not be available to third parties without a court order. The new national ID Cards will require individuals to provide finger prints. Larocque says the new amendments to the electoral bills, will protect this sensitive information.
