The community of Colihaut is making big plans to celebrate its 10th Reunion Anniversary under the theme “Together We Are One”, and the reunion committee is encouraging all Dominicans at home and abroad, to come out and show their support, during their twelve days of activities from 27th July to 7th August 2017.
At a press conference on Friday 9th June, Nicholas George, President of the planning committee said the reunion event is geared at harnessing and embracing the creativity of everyone from the village, including their diversity in style, faith, and other beliefs, so as to strengthen the unity among villagers, in delivering services that enhance development of the community. George noted that the program of activities includes a Miss Reunion 2017 Pageant, a villagers and diaspora “Meet and Greet”, and a church service. A highlight of the program, is “Reliving Tropical Storm Erika” on Tuesday 1st August 2017. Secretary of the planning committee, Mitchel John said, “We are going to have an activity for that night where we will be talking about what Erika did to us, showing videos and pictures of Erika, learning from this experience so that we can be more resilient in the community”. Meantime, George added the event will also seek to highlight the cultural history and heritage of the village, institutionalize memory of its elders, and engaging the youth in helping to further develop the community. The planning committee is looking to attract some 800 members of the community who are currently living outside of the village, as well as overseas, to attend the celebration. George says many Dominicans abroad are already showing keen interest in coming home for the event. George noted that they have made requests for sponsorships, but have not yet received responses from the government, via the minister for finance, and they are also waiting to hear from the private sector.
