He says plans for the geothermal project were well underway prior to Hurricane Maria; however, government and the geothermal energy team have had to return to the Roseau Valley area to evaluate the impact of the hurricane on the flora and fauna of the country, and also take into consideration the social impacts on the lives of the people, in making the development viable in that community, without negatively affecting residents. Henderson says government plans to sell power to DOMLEC, which will in turn sell power to consumers without a mark-up. He added that the World Bank has given Government a grace period of 10 years, before it is to begin repayment on the loan. Henderson says government has already put aside $9M toward the project by way of equity; will contribute over $7M to acquire more land, and put an additional amounts toward the legal services of the project. Meanwhile, the World Bank has reportedly committed $100M towards Dominica's Geothermal energy and electricity program. This was revealed at the launch of the Climate Resilience Execution Agency of Dominica (CREAD) at the Goodwill Parish Hall Friday. At the launching, the UK government also committed £50M towards Dominica's reconstruction efforts post Hurricane Maria. More news on the launch of the CREAD will be brought in subsequent newscasts.
