Dementia Foundation launched on September 2, 2016 to raise funds & awareness, is 2 years old9/5/2017 The Dominica Dementia Foundation, which was launched on September 2, 2016 is 2 years old. The non-profit organization was formed to raise awareness of Dementia, funds for affected families, to provide emotional support to caregivers and families, and to facilitate research on Dementia.
Initiator of the Foundation, Ms Rianna Patterson, is expressing gratitude for the support of the public, in their quest to make Dominica a Dementia Friendly Island. Ms Patterson said, “We have come a long way in such a short space of time. We are grateful, and will continue to raise awareness and support those with Dementia in Dominica”. An international campaign called ‘World Alzheimer’s Month’ takes place every September, to raise awareness on the challenge and stigma that surrounds dementia. World Alzheimer’s Month was launched in 2012, World Alzheimer’s Day is commemorated on 21st September each year. Members of the public are encouraged to wear purple on September 21, in recognition of those who have Dementia, and are also requested to use the hashtag #WAM2017. There will be a yoga session by Ms Trudy Prevost at Fort Young Hotel in Roseau on 28th September 2017, and persons are asked to come and support this event.
