DEXIA General Manager says over half a million dollars is needed to fully restore the Roseau Market12/11/2017 Photo: DA Vibes DEXIA General Manager Gregoire Thomas says over half a million dollars is needed to restore the Roseau Market to full and effective operational capacity. The market was extensively damaged during the passage of Hurricane Maria, and although the vendors have been made to return there, there are still many challenges ahead.
Thomas said, “We have a situation where we are only providing the basics in terms of the vending space. Some of our tables got lost, and we must replenish them, so that people can vend. Fifty (50) major tenants at the market have lost all their equipment and are unable to function. They are not able to use the space because they do not have appliances, they do not have the facilities to operate, and we are in the process of gathering that information, so that we can present a case to seek support, to see how we move forward to restore that part of the Roseau Market life”. The situation is made even worse as vendors have been complaining about the lack of electricity however, the market has to be rewired and recertified in order for it to be reconnected to the electricity grid. Since Maria, DOMLEC made rewiring and recertification mandatory in order to receive electricity. Thomas said, “this is part of the $500,000 plus financing that we require, to bring the Roseau Market back to a state where we can operate effectively at the Roseau Market”.
