While the Dominica Freedom Party applauds Prime minister Skerrit for postponing the passing of the proposed amendments to Dominica’s electoral laws, the party is of the view that Mr Skerrit disrespected Dominicans who protested against the proposed amendments. Last week, the prime minister addressed the nation, and announced the decision of his cabinet to postpone the passage of the proposed amendments, until the Dominican public had an opportunity to weigh in on it. However, general secretary of the DFP Johnson Boston says, the prime minister’s attempt to discredit the oppositions claims, was in poor taste, showed his disrespect for the Dominicans who exercised their legal right to protest against these amendments. Meanwhile, Boston is demanding that members of the Parliament respect the ideals of statesmanship, democracy, civil discussion and constructive engagement during parliamentary debates.
Boston stated on Q95fm Radio, that in the days of Former Political Leaders Mike Douglas, Eugenia Charles and Roosie Douglas, Dominica’s parliament was highly respected, entertaining and very productive. These powerful figures each had their different policies and views regarding the governance of the country. However, according to Boston, they possessed so much statesmanship, that they would socialize with each other after each parliamentary session, and that was also the case among other members of the parliament. He says this mature type of leadership also showed within the supporters of each political party, as persons could argue a political issue, and still share a drink.
