Based on a report published on 31st December 2018 from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Dominica will lead regional growth in 2019, with a 9% expansion, mainly due to the increase in construction for rebuilding damage structures, post Hurricane Maria in 2017, and the influx of grant funding and donations from international countries for reconstruction. Next in line are the Dominican Republic with a (5.7 per cent), Panama with (5.6 per cent), Antigua and Barbuda with (4.7 per cent) and Guyana with (4.6 per cent). Speaking to Q95 news on Monday, Economist and Leader of the Dominica Freedom Party, Kent Vital, expressed that based on his vast experience in economics, this is expected statistically, however, this figure of 9% growth will not reflect in society as they are not new jobs or businesses being created, instead, the monies given and investments made are to resuscitate already existing businesses, homes and public buildings which were just destroyed by a natural disaster. Additionally, the DFP Political Leader singled out the fact, that majority of the reconstruction efforts have not been spearheaded by the government of Dominica, but by international aid agencies.
