Chief Executive Officer of Digicel Dominica, Nikima Royer-Jno Baptiste says Construction has commenced on primary schools and homes in the Kalinago Territory, after the community was severely affected by the passage of Hurricane Maria last September.
Following the passage of the storm, Digicel made a commitment to rebuild seven affected primary schools in the south-east, as well as three hundred and sixty homes in the Kalinago Territory. Royer-Jno Baptiste stated that through their chairman, Digicel secured a commitment from the Clinton Action Network, to rebuild the seven primary schools and the three hundred and sixty homes, at a cost of US$1.45 million. She says work has begun on the Castle Bruce Primary School, as well as on the homes, which are scheduled to be completed before the start of the 2018 hurricane season; while the schools are forecasted to be completed in time for the start of the upcoming school year. Royer-Jno Baptiste said, “We are on the ground as of right now, at Castle Bruce, we have started the demolition works. Another team will be mobilized at Concord later this week. Our mobilization partner on the homes, ISRA-Aid has started working on the first five homes, and we are moving swiftly ahead”. While she acknowledged the scope of the project, she said they would not expect everything to start at once, but Digicel has a phased approach towards the initiatives ahead. She added, “We are confident that we are going to complete it within the timeline that we have set for ourselves”.
