Fire officials have confirmed that officers at the Roseau Fire Station responded to a fire call in Newtown at approximately 7.37pm Tuesday night.
The blaze is said to have occurred in the area near the Newtown Roman Catholic Church and the building with all its contents was completely destroyed by the blaze. According to an official statement from fire officials, the building in question was a dilapidated dwelling house constructed of lumber and concrete blocks. It stated further that the owners are deceased and no formal tenant resided in the building but it was being utilized by other persons. Two other buildings in close proximity were also slightly damaged by the blaze however, no injuries were reported. Fire officials say investigations into the cause of fire are still ongoing. Meanwhile Roseau South MP Joshua Francis says police have begun investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fire while fire officials are investigating the cause of the fire. He went on to applaud the residents of Newtown for their support shown to those affected by the fire.
