Dive Dominica held its 1st post Maria event Sunday, to show resilience of Dominica’s Marine World1/15/2018 Dive Dominica held its first post Hurricane Maria event on Sunday 14th January 2018, with one of the objectives being to show the resilience of Dominica’s Marine World.
The event is dubbed Reef Dive, and will focus on the coral reefs in the Soufriere/Scotts Head Marine Reserve, Arienne Perryman of Dive Dominica said, “We’re excited to finally bring our first official scheduled dive back to our local diving population, and any foreign divers we have on island. We want to get our divers out on the reef, exploring what’s going on here now.” She expected the dive would show that the reefs were not significantly impacted by the hurricane, and still possessed much of their beauty. Perryman added, “Some of the most significant and dramatic driving is to the south; very colorful and dramatic type diving, beautiful reefs, corals, sponges and nurseries are available for fish. We want to bring people out onto the reef, to see that they were not significantly destroyed or damaged by the hurricane”. The event was opened to certified divers. However, instructors were available to persons without any diving experience. All reports indicate that the event was reasonably well attended and went according to plan. The dive boat returned to shore at approximately 2:00 pm.
