The St. Lucian Ladies National Football team succeeded in restricting the Dominican Ladies National Football side to a goalless draw at Warner Park, when they locked horns on Friday afternoon in the Caribbean Football Challenge series at Warner Park in St Kitts.
The match had a dire start as the two teams failed to convert their chances at goal in the first half. The initial moments of the tie witnessed the St Lucian team hitting the ball across the bar from the Dominican 18-yard line and being kicked out of danger by a defender. Late in the first half, the Dominicans failed to capitalize on a set-piece. The youngest player on the Dominican side, 16-year-old Sari Finn hit the ball just a bit high over the cross bar from a corner kick inside the crowded Lucian penalty box. The second half was an action-filled 45 minutes as Coach Latchoo’s team was tested by the St Lucians in the midfield and defence departments. The formation which the coach employed in the previous match against St Kitts was changed, with one attacking and two defensive midfielders. Goal keeper Sobers performed brilliantly for the second time in the series, and Kari Bertrand anchored the defensive backline, denying the opposition any real chance on the target. When the final whistle was blown just about the time when the sun disappeared over Warner park, the Bouyon ladies had left everything on the field, playing their hearts out in an intense and much more coordinated and organized game. The Dominicans take on St Vincent in the last game on Sunday at 7:30 pm. In the second match St Kitts beat St Vincent 2 - 0. The hosts scored off a penalty kick in the 6th minute, and then off a controversial goal late in the first half. However, the Dominica Women’s team beat St Vincent & The Grenadines 3 – 0 in an exciting match on Sunday evening at Warner Park in St Kitts. The Nature Girls return home today. More on that game in the midday news package.
