Dominica-born police officer in Antigua & Barbuda, Corporal Raul ‘Greg’ Grell made headlines in that country after he saved the life of an Antiguan and is now hailed a hero.
Five days ago, Grell was just finishing his usual fishing escapade at 5am in the morning, while walking away he heard a lady pleading for assistance. Grell told media he ran toward the voice and saw the head of a male figure struggling to stay afloat in the water. Grell immediately dived into the water in the man’s direction. The officer said he approached the elderly man from the back, grabbed him around his waist and pulled him to the surface of the water, the man could not swim, and was carried ashore. “I put his hand around my waist, and I told him ‘don’t panic, I got you’.” The elderly man and his wife were on a boating excursion early that morning. At the docks, with his wife piloting the boat, the man attempted to reverse a two-door SUV to load the boat onto the trailer attached. In his interview with observer Radio on Tuesday, Corporal Grell said after the man had properly loaded the boat onto the trailer, he mistakenly kept the vehicle in reverse and accelerated, which subsequently launched the boat and the van into the water near the shore.
