The Dominica Cancer Society (DCS) will be holding its annual ‘Walk For Cancer”, on 7th October 2017, at 4:00 pm, to raise funds for patients with cancer, as it continues efforts to mitigate the expenses associated with cancer medication and treatment.
The walk will be held under the DCS theme for the year, “I Can, You Can, Educate and Advocate for Cancer Care.” The walkers will start from two locations - from Mams supermarket in Massacre, and from the Point Michel Cemetery - from where they will converge on the Dame Eugenia Charles Boulevard. President of the Society, Yvonne Alexander, says this particular event has gained popularity over the years, and brings in the most funds to the organization. Alexander said, “This is one of the activities in which we get many individuals, business houses, friends and supporters of the Cancer Society to just come on board, and be with us. It is a fun activity anyhow”. The 2016 Walk for Cancer raised some $80,000, just 20% short of the set target of $100,000. According to Vice President of the Society, Vena Royer, the goal this year is to surpass the previous goal of $100,000. Royer said “We are encouraged by government efforts. We received a grant of $100,000 from them, because I am sure they were impressed with the efforts we were making, and we are thankful for that”. Other activities on the agenda for this year include; Pan in Harmony done on behalf of the Cancer Society; Annual candlelight service at the People’s Pentecostal Church; Concert of Hope, and the Annual ‘Do you Believe’ Movie night.
