In Observance of World Diabetes Day 2018, the Dominica Diabetes Association (DOMDA) will embark on activities, to highlight the harmful effects of consumption of sugar sweetened foods andbeverages, on family life and general well being.
The Dominica Diabetes Association is calling on all Citizens to observe No Sugar Day on 14th November 2018. On that day, emphasis will be placed on harmful consumption of soft drinks, sodas, and their relationship with obesity and diabetes. On 1st September 2015, the government of Dominic implemented a 10% excise tax on food and drinks with high sugar content. This included sweets, candy, soft drinks, chocolate bars, and all other sweetened drinks. This was aimed at reducing the consumption of harmful amounts of sugar with ultimate goal of achieving a reduction in chronic non-communicable diseases. DOMDA hopes ‘No Sugar Day’ will continue as a weekly occurrence throughout homes in Dominica and will lead to the adoption of behaviors resulting in drastic reduction in daily intake of free sugars.
