Dominica is among 2 Caribbean countries participating in the global GEF Islands Programme

Dominica is among two Caribbean countries participating in an over 8 million dollars Global Environment Facility, GEF, Islands Programme. The programme, executed in the region by the Basel Convention Regional Centre for the Caribbean (BCRC-Caribbean), is an initiative designed to prevent the build-up of toxic chemicals, plastics, and hazardous waste in Small Island Developing States (SIDS). 

The Bahamas is the other Caribbean country taking part in the programme along with 21 countries worldwide. As part of the broader project, the Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the Basel Convention Regional Centre for the Caribbean, BCRC-Caribbean, hosted a two-day National Training Workshop last week, as part of efforts to address challenges in chemical and waste management. 

Through an updated National Implementation Plan under the Stockholm Convention, Dominica is seeking to strengthen its environmental management framework. The Stockholm Convention is a global, legally binding UN treaty designed to protect human health and the environment from the effects of Persistent Organic Pollutants 

The initiative, according to Lisana Dyer, Senior Policy Advisor in the Ministry of Environment, is aimed at modernizing the island’s response while meeting obligations under Stockholm Convention.
