Dominica joins the rest of the world in celebrating International Women's Day today under the theme #BeBoldForChange.
The theme calls on women to be bold in the fight to create a more inclusive, gender equal world. According to the UN, International Women's Day is a day to recognize women for their achievements without regard to divisions. It is also an occasion to look back on the past struggles and accomplishments of women and to look ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations. The Girl Guides Association of Dominica is using today as an opportunity to extend solidarity to women locally, regionally and internationally. In an official statement, the Acting Chief Commissioner, Valencia Webb, called for women empowerment. "We should always remember that women's empowerment should never be reduced to individual success stories; instead it should be about collective well-being. You are urged to make a difference, think globally and act locally" she said. Meanwhile, the Bureau of Gender Affairs have organized activities to commemorate the day. Among them are a discussion today at the Calypso House with youth of the Silver Lake community on "Empowering our youth to stop Gender-based violence' from 3pm and a Feminine solidarity march on March 11th, from the Botanic Gardens to the Bayfront, from 2-4pm.
