The Dominica National Women’s Football team fell 1-0 in their first match under the flood lights of Warner Park to tournament hosts St Kitts, in the Caribbean Football Union 2018 Women’s Challenge Series.
The Bouyon ladies mostly played a defensive game as they tried to ward off a very physical and attacking Kittitian quad, who were cheered on by a large and boisterous home crowd. The Bertrand sisters Kira and Kyree played gallantly and held the opponents in check in the defensive backfield. Veteran Goal keeper Christine Sobers made some magnificent saves, and helped to give her team a fighting chance. But St Kitts found the back of the Dominican net in the 68th minute, when left winger Britany Lawrence received a crisp ball just outside the Dominican penalty box from wide right winger Tracy Spinner, and placed it passed the outstretched gloves of Sobers, and into the goal. The St Kitts team proved to be more tactical, physical and technical, and more organized than the Dominicans, who may need to work on their tactics and techniques, and also to improve their overall coordination and field positioning as a team. In an earlier game, St Lucia defeated St Vincent 1-0. Dominica takes on the St Lucian ladies on Friday 20th April at 5:00 PM at Warner Park.
