Over the period 11th to 16th November 2019, the Dominica Social Security will host a Week of Activities under the Theme: “Dominica Social Security—Partnering with You for Better Health and Financial Wellness”. Pursuant to this theme, the Week of Activities is intended to heighten the public’s awareness regarding the Non Communicable Diseases (NCD’s) and the various Cancers that are prevalent in our society as well as to highlight the role of the Dominica Social Security both in the promotion of better health and the provision of financial relief to its insured population in times of economic hardship which is occasioned by such factors as illness, pregnancy, disability, old age and death.
In keeping with the institution’s quest to achieve a healthier and better informed stakeholder base which can translate to improved compliance and broader coverage of the population, the planned activities consist mainly of the following: The convening Employers Seminars in Roseau (on Tuesday November 12) and Portsmouth (on Thursday November 14), through which newly registered Employers will be apprised of their rights, responsibilities and obligations under the Social Security Act and Regulations, & obtain guidance in the proper completion of relevant Social Security forms and documents; Hosting two Radio Panel Discussions—which will be relayed simultaneously across the various Radio Stations—addressing the ailments of Diabetes (on Monday 11th and Prostate Cancer (on Wednesday 13th) and their impact on the population and on the Social Security Programme. The Panelists for each of these discussions will include a Medical Practitioner, a representative from the Dominica Social Security and one from the local body/support group for the respective condition—i.e. the Diabetic Association and Cancer Society; Mounting of Open Days at both the Portsmouth Branch Office (on Tuesday 12th) and at the Head Office in Roseau (on Friday 15th), where members of the public are encouraged to visit the respective offices to interact with members of staff, to check their status and obtain pertinent information; The staging a Mini Health Fair at the DSS Premises in Roseau—on Wednesday 13th November—at which members of the public will be able to access free health services including Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar checks, Measurement of Body Mass Index and basic Health Counselling re. diet, exercise and general management of their health conditions; Conducting a 1-hour Cardio Jam session at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium, from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Saturday 16th November, which will be open to staff and members of the general public. The DSS is hopeful that, through this week of activities and its continuing quest to educate the public, Dominicans will embrace the need to ensure Better Health as they become more familiar with the whole concept of Social Security, and so, better appreciate the programme and the role that we are all expected to play in ensuring the sustainability of the Fund and, thereby, ensure the Financial Well-being of successive generations of Dominicans.
