Dominica State College wins 1st debate competition among Windward Islands Community Colleges3/6/2017 Photo: DA Vibes Five (5) Dominica State College (DSC) students have won the first debate competition among Community Colleges in the Windward Islands. This took place at the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College in St Lucia, on Friday 3rd March and Saturday 4th March 2017.
Almira Lewis, Nicol John-Lewis, Inoela Vital, Daniel Panthier and Marie-Ange Emanuel represented the DSC, and were accompanied by Coach & Advisor of the DSC College Literary & Debating Society, Trudy Christian. They returned to Dominica on Sunday 5th March 2017, and spoke to the media at the Roseau Ferry Terminal. Ms Christian stated that while they prepared extensively, the event was very stressful, but they ultimately made a clean sweep of the awards; Miss Marie-Ange Emmanuel got the award for Best Speaker in the Semi-Final Round; Miss Almira Lewis got the prize for Best Speaker in the Final Debate Round; and Miss Almira Lewis also won the prize for Best overall speaker for the entire competition. The other two Colleges that participated in the debate were the Saint Vincent & the Grenadines Community College, and the T A Marryshow Community College, represented Grenada. Three corporate entities, the Agricultural Industrial and Development Bank, the University of the West Indies Open Campus Site and the Grand Bay Cooperative Credit Union all contributed towards the team participating in the competition. The Dominica team will debate the Leeward Islands winner, Nevis, in the coming months.
