Dominican Freedom Party leader Bernard Hurtault criticized the DLP regime's collapsing economy, stating that 30%-40% of their national budget is reliant on heavy oppressive and counterproductive taxes
Leader of the Dominican Freedom Party, Bernard Hurtault, highlighted the concerning state of Dominica’s economy, emphasizing that the combined revenue from individual income taxes and business income taxes constitutes less than 10% of the national budget. In contrast, developed countries like the United States derive over 50% of their budget from the productive activities of their economies. This situation underscores the economic challenges faced by Dominica.
Hurtault continued to explain that a significant portion, around 30 to 40% of the country's budget relies on heavy and burdensome taxes. These taxes, particularly high import duties and VAT, are seen as oppressive and counterproductive. They discourage entrepreneurial ventures, limit consumer spending and hinder economic growth.
