In response to the Port Workers and the DPSU’s strike against DASPA, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has announced DASPA’s position regarding the demands of the Port Workers on concluding salary negotiations for the 2014 – 2016 triennium. The Prime Minister addressed the nation at the Financial Center, on 6th March 2018 at 10 am. The Dominican Prime Minister has labeled Port Workers and DPSU as selfish and self serving. Skerrit went on to explain, in a rhetorical fashion, the reason why Port Workers should not receive salary increases. In addition Skerrit noted the losses and damages incurred on DASPA due to the passage of Hurricane Maria, Skerrit authoritatively stated, that DASPA would not hold negotiations with individuals on strike, stating that this is a firm position of DASPA and his government. Meanwhile DPSU General Secretary Thomas Letang has responded to Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit emergency address to the nation on Friday, labeling it as total nonsense. He says last night Letang said he spoke to CEO of DASPA Benoit Bardouille, on the matter of organizing an executive meeting to conclude salary negotiations on the 2014 to 2016 triennium. Letang says he met with his staff and Port workers and explained to them DASPA’s willingness to meet on 21st March 2018. The DPSU General Secretary has also called for an end to misleading impressions from leaders in government and institutions, stating that the actions and demands of the port workers are justified.
