Spicer in red. Photo: Dominica Olympics Committee Media Team Dominica’s boxing athlete Valerian Spicer lost her match in favour of Scotland at the Commonwealth Games. Her dreams of winning a medal for Dominica were dealt a surprising blow when the judges scored the fight 5-0, 0-5, 4-1 by a split decision in favour of an 18-year-old fighter from Scotland.
Spicer appeared to have dominated the first two rounds and secured a standing 8-count in the second round of the fight. She appeared to be shocked by the judges’ decision after 3 rounds. Team Manager, Barry Casimir, spoke to the Dominica Olympic Committee Media Team after the bout, and expressed disappointment with the results from the Judges. Casimir said, “I think Valerian did her best. Really and truly, I’m somewhat disappointed at the results, because I think she had a very good outing. That sort of outing thing makes you feel like you get punched in the gut, but we’re just hoping that the rest of our athletes can follow in Valerian’s footsteps; we’re excited at the way she competed, and we’re hoping everybody else can follow suit”. Casimir said he was shocked at the result, given Spicer’s overall quality performance, and the fact that she was able to get a standing 8-count in the second round. He added, “As a matter of fact, at the closing of the second round, I leaned over to DOC president Billy Doctrove, and I said, ‘that is the first one in the bag’. That is how confident I was at the outcome. To hear that she lost by a split decision was a shock. I’m actually lost for words. In fact the entire team was lost for words”. Casimir commended Spicer and her coach for doing an “excellent” job in preparing for her participation in the games.
