The Electoral Office of Dominica has released a statement on the National Panel Discussion carded for tomorrow 22nd May 2019 at the Goodwill Parish Hall from 6pm, entitled The Electoral Process: The Way Forward. This discussion is held in collaboration with the Dominica State College and the University of the West Indies Open Campus. The Electoral Office believes the issue of Electoral Reform needs to be soberly discussed, with respect to the issues surrounding the Electoral Process, with a view towards public education, and these discussions ought to be held by those charged with shaping the legislation. The Electoral Office has invited two Government parliamentarians and two opposition parliamentarians. These discussions will take place in the presence of persons from groups, NGOs and other organizations from a wide cross section of Dominica who we have invited to participate as audience members and pose questions to the panel. Meanwhile, many voters are expressing the opinion that there is no need for another discussion, when the only things that matter at this stage, are the cleansing of the voters card, and the issuance of voter ID Cards, none of which require any amendments to the exiting legislation, and only require the Government’s Finance Minister to make the necessary funds available to the Electoral Commission, to carry out those two tasks, just as was done in several other Caribbean Islands in recent times.
