Dr. Damien Dublin affirms moral basis for reparations and calls for expanded public dialogue

Dr. Damien Dublin, chairman of the Dominica National Reparations Committee, highlighted the persistent economic and social disparities stemming from historical exploitation, noting that descendants of former colonizers continue to reap benefits while descendants of the enslaved continue to feel the negative impacts.

Dublin emphasized that even if the push for reparations faces legal hurdles, the moral justification for compensation remains undeniable. He provided background on the Dominica National Reparations Committee, recalling that it was established following a CARICOM decision via a Cabinet mandate and officially falls under the purview of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Addressing the committee's ongoing work, Dr. Dublin expressed full agreement on the need for greater visibility and public engagement surrounding the reparations movement. While highlighting current initiatives—such as educational outreach in schools, panel discussions, and radio programs—he stressed that open public forums are essential for broadening awareness.

​Dublin concluded that expanding these discussions to reach a wider audience will strengthen public understanding and build momentum for the reparations cause.
