The level of literacy skills displayed by this current generation seems to be on a downhill trend according to the latest reports found from researchers around the world. Dr. Emmanuel Finn, Author and Dentist residing in Washington, shared his sentiments as to why that may be so. Dr. Finn who was speaking on Part-2 of the series on the topic ‘the rise and fall of Dominica Literature and change agents over the years’ on Q95’s weekly radio program entitled ‘The Global View on Q’ on Tuesday night, 16th April 2019. Dr Finn contends that this phenomenon could be attributed to a number of different things, such as social media, smart phones and other technological advances, which have somewhat encouraged and made it acceptable to use shortcuts in spelling and proper sentence construction, and thereby may have compromised the need for reading. Dr. Finn says incentives could be introduced to improve reading, and reducing the amount of time spent watching television could be considered as an option. Meantime, Economist and historian Dr. Thompson Fontain says this is something that we need to focus on, and ask ourselves where have we gone Wrong.
